I am a graduate of the University of Florida and currently live in Gainesville, FL. I have been uninsured for six years. I have a history of chronic depression and generalized anxiety, and getting treatment for my mental health issues has been a challenge without health insurance. I recently signed up for health insurance through the Marketplace, but my coverage does not start until next month. The plan I signed up for is a low-cost plan, so I’m not completely sure what my out-of-pocket expenses are going to be when I use my plan towards my health care.
For my health care needs, I have been relying on charity clinics once in a while and getting care for any new ailments sporadically. It’s useful, but the process usually involves long wait times and you need to reserve a lot of time during the day just to go to one appointment. Unfortunately, these clinics are not offered frequently enough. If I had Medicaid, I would be able to see a physician more often to get proper treatments for these chronic illnesses.
Recently, I started exploring psychiatrists who are covered by my new insurance plan. However, the providers in my area are very limited. It has been difficult to get in touch with most of the providers I have called, and the one who answered has a waiting period of two months before the next available appointment. It’s frustrating to me because, despite starting a new insurance plan, it doesn’t look like I will be able to smoothly access the services I need. As a backup plan, I think I will first seek care through a primary care provider, hoping that I can still get my mental health needs met to some extent through this provider.
While getting some care is better than nothing at all, it bothers me to know that I am paying for insurance and still might not get the care I truly need. I’m grateful that there are at least some free and low-cost services for primary care, but we shouldn’t have to rely on that. There has to be a better system and procedure for all of this.

Soy graduado de la Universidad de la Florida y actualmente vivo en Gainesville, FL. He vivido sin seguro de salud por seis años. Tengo historial de depresión crónica y de ansiedad generalizada. Para mi ha sido un obstáculo no tener seguro de salud para poder obtener el tratamiento adecuado para mis trastornos de salud mental. Me inscribí recientemente para un plan de seguro de salud a través del Marketplace, pero mi cobertura no empieza hasta el próximo mes. El plan en el cual me inscribí es de bajo costo, entonces no se todavía cuáles serán los gastos fuera de mi presupuesto cuando utilice el seguro para mis servicios de salud.
Para mis necesidades de salud, he estado dependiendo de vez en cuando en clínicas caritativas, recibiendo servicios esporádicamente. Es útil tener esta opción, pero el proceso usualmente es demorado y hay que esperar muchas horas para ser atendido. Desafortunadamente, estas clínicas no las ofrecen con suficiente frecuencia. Si tuviera Medicaid, podría ver a un médico más a menudo para obtener los tratamientos adecuados para mis enfermedades crónicas.

Como plan de respaldo, creo que primero buscaré servicios a través de un médico primario. Ojalá pueda recibir servicios de salud mental hasta cierto punto a través de ese proveedor.
Mientras pienso que recibir algún tipo de servicio de salud es mejor que nada, me molesta saber que estaré pagando por seguro de salud sin poder quizás recibir los servicios que en realidad necesito. Me siento agradecido de que por lo menos existen algunos servicios gratis o de bajo costo para servicios de salud primaria, pero nadie debe depender de eso. Debe haber un mejor sistema y proceso para todo esto.
