I’ve been uninsured for about 20 years and have been coming to the Equal Access Clinic for medical help for the past couple of years. It’s been such a long time since I’ve had insurance because I can’t afford it. I applied for insurance through the Marketplace before and was going to be charged around $400 a month. There’s no way I could afford that. That’s as much as my rent and I’m struggling to pay rent as it is.
I have high blood pressure and need routine medical visits to get it treated which is why I go to the Equal Access Clinic. Years ago, I had a friend who was a doctor that helped me out when I needed medical care, but she moved away so that’s not an option for me anymore. Since I didn’t have access to my blood pressure medication after that, I actually ended up in the hospital in 2018. My blood pressure was at 220 over 120, or something really high like that. I was experiencing the worst headaches I’ve ever had in my life. The nurse who assisted me told me that she had seen people have strokes with less blood pressure than the one I went in with. I think I was about to have a stroke or a heart attack-- I think I was about to die. I’ve been coming to the Equal Access Clinic ever since that incident happened.
Without the Equal Access Clinic, I would probably be back in the hospital. I don’t know how I would get my blood pressure medication without it. If Medicaid was expanded in Florida and I qualified for it, I know I’d at least be a lot less stressed about my blood pressure issues, which are probably caused by stress. I also think I’d have a doctor who I could see regularly. I’m lucky that I get to come to the Equal Access Clinic, but I see a different doctor every time I’m here. I don’t ever get to know just one doctor. It would be nice to see the same doctor every time. I think that’s something that might make a difference in my health care.
Regarding dental health care, I haven’t been to a dentist in about five years. The last time I went, I just remember it being expensive. I typically don’t enjoy going to the dentist because I don’t really like having drills in my mouth. However, if I had some sort of dental insurance, I think I would go to the dentist more and would take care of this aspect of my health more.
Not having health insurance is frustrating and stressful. Without it, I’ve had to delay medical care, rely on charitable clinics, and have even ended up in the hospital. If I had health coverage, I wouldn’t have to worry about my health care as much as I do.

No he tenido seguro médico por aproximadamente 20 años y he estado acudiendo al Equal Access Clinic para mis servicios médicos durante los últimos dos años. He pasado tanto tiempo sin seguro de salud porque no puedo pagarlo. Solicité un seguro a través del Marketplace en el pasado y me iban a cobrar alrededor de $400 al mes. No hay forma de que pueda pagar eso. Esa es la cantidad que me toca pagar por mi arriendo y es una lucha poder pagarlo.
Tengo presión arterial alta y necesito visitar al médico para tratarla. Por eso voy al Equal Access Clinic. Tenía antes una amiga que es doctora que me ayudaba cuando necesitaba atención médica, pero ella se mudó, así que esa ya no es una opción para mí. Como no tuve acceso a mis medicamentos para la presión arterial después de eso, terminé en el hospital en el 2018. Mi presión arterial estaba en 220 sobre 120, o algo realmente alto como eso. Estaba teniendo los peores dolores de cabeza que he tenido en mi vida. La enfermera que me atendió me dijo que había visto a personas sufrir derrames cerebrales con menos presión arterial que la que tenía yo. Creo que estaba a punto de sufrir un derrame cerebral o un ataque cardíaco. Creo que estaba a punto de morir. Vengo al Equal Access Clinic desde que sucedió eso.
Sin el Equal Access Clinic, probablemente estaría de regreso en el hospital. No sé cómo obtendría mi medicamento para la presión arterial sin él. Si el program de Medicaid se expandiera en la Florida y yo calificara para ello, sé que al menos no me estresaría tanto por mis problemas de presión arterial, que probablemente son causados por el estrés. También creo que tendría un médico al que pudiera ver con regularidad. Tengo suerte de poder venir al Equal Access Clinic, pero veo a un médico diferente cada vez que estoy aquí. Nunca llego a conocer a un solo médico. Sería bueno ver siempre al mismo médico. Creo que es algo que podría marcar una diferencia en mi atención médica.
En cuanto a la atención de la salud dental, no he ido al dentista en unos cinco años. La última vez que fui, recuerdo que fue caro. Por lo general, no disfruto ir al dentista porque realmente no me gusta tener aparatos odontológicos en la boca. Sin embargo, si tuviera algún tipo de seguro dental, creo que iría más al dentista y cuidaría más mi salud en ese aspecto.
No tener seguro médico es frustrante y estresante. Sin seguro, he tenido que retrasar la atención médica, depender de clínicas benéficas, e incluso he terminado en el hospital. Si tuviera cobertura médica, no tendría que preocuparme por el cuidado de mi salud tanto como normalmente lo hago.
